Indianapolis is known as The Racing Capital of the World. Every May, hundreds of thousands congregate to the racing mecca known as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where they watch Indy Cars circulate around a two and a half mile track, two hundred times! This heart-pounding race typically occurs on Memorial Day Weekend, the last weekend in May.

As engines heat up in preparation for Race Day, warm temperatures and longer days are here to stay. This makes May the perfect time to plan, prep and install Summer Flowers. The last frost has come and gone, daybreak is getting earlier and the warm weather is persistent. In Indiana (Zone 6), we often tell our customers the ideal time to install Summer Flowers is around Memorial Day.

This Memorial Day, start your tiller engines and get to planting with these helpful Summer Flower tips and tricks.

  • Know What You Grow
Before planting your Summer Annuals, make sure you are aware of their specific needs. Sunlight exposure, water necessities and expected height are all important factors in having a marvelous flower display.
  • Proper Planter Designs: Thriller, Filler and Spiller
Each planter should have three floral design characteristics: A thriller (singular center piece), a filler (colorful blooms that fill the planter) and a spiller (trailing variety that spills over the edge).
  • Complementary Colors Combinations
When selecting your flower varieties, make sure to tie in various aspects of their colors across the board to create a cohesive flower installation. If the center piece has a particular shade of pink housed within its leaves, tie in the shade elsewhere to promote a cohesive color palette.
