Winter Ice Damage to Trees
OK, you've just made it though another Indiana winter ice storm. What do you do if some of your trees haven't done as well as you? Besides cleaning up the fallen branches, you'll need to find out if you have any other broken limbs that haven't fallen yet. These should be removed. You'll also want to prune the ragged breaks on any trees to help them heal properly. While bigger projects, such as trying to save a tree with a split trunk, probably call for a professional arborist, the smaller breaks can be cared for by the homeowner armed with the proper information. Purdue's Department of Horticulture has put together a wonderfully detailed guide to pruning techniques and tools in their Pruning Ornamental Trees and Shrubs.
